What's your boiler doing?

Being out on the coast, we see a few faults more than most, frozen condensate pipes in a cold snap being the big one. Whatever yours is doing, we've seen it before.

No heating or hot water

Radiators stone cold, or the tap never warms up. Could be a diverter valve, a pump, a fan or a control fault. We'll track it down.

Losing pressure

If you're topping it up every week, something's leaking or the expansion vessel has given up. Topping up just hides the problem.

Error codes and lockouts

Flashing lights or a code on the display, and it won't stay on after a reset. We know the codes on all the main makes.

Leaks and drips

Water under the boiler or round the pipework is never one to ignore. Turn it off if you can and give us a ring.

Banging, gurgling or whistling

Odd noises usually mean air in the system, sludge, or a part on its way out. Better caught early than when it packs in.

Won't fire up

Clicking but no flame, or nothing at all. Ignition and gas valve faults are bread and butter for a Gas Safe engineer.

My boiler stopped in the cold and is showing a fault. Could the condensate pipe be frozen?

Quite possibly. Modern boilers drain water through a small plastic pipe that often runs outside, and it can freeze when it's bitterly cold. Pour warm (not boiling) water along the outside pipe to thaw it, then reset the boiler. If it still won't go, or it keeps happening, give us a ring and we can reroute or insulate the pipe so it doesn't happen again.

All the main makes, including Baxi, Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal, Viessmann, Glow-worm, Potterton and Alpha. If yours is something older or more unusual, just ask.

My boiler is getting on a bit. Should I keep repairing it?

If it's a sound boiler with a cheap part gone, we'll fix it. If it's 10 to 15 years old, has broken down a few times or parts are hard to get, a new one is usually better value. We'll tell you straight and leave the decision to you.

What should I check before I call?

Check the pressure gauge (usually between 1 and 1.5 bar when cold), make sure the thermostat is turned up and the timer is on, and if you have a prepayment meter, check there's credit. If it's none of those, ring us on 01253 812682.
